Now that is what I call service!

Just after I wrote my earlier blog entry the courier company that was delivering my new laptop sent me an email that notified me of the times between which I could expect the delivery to be made ... 3.19pm to 4.19pm.

At precisely 3.18pm a courier van stopped outside my house, and at 3.19pm the driver was ringing the doorbell. He handed over the parcel containing my new laptop, and by 3.20pm he had driven off.

Now that is what I call service!

The new laptop has now been unpacked and is presently being charged. It has already been registered with Microsoft, and Office 365 is currently being downloaded and installed. Once that is complete I hope to spend the evening setting the laptop up to suit my particular needs.

I'm sure that I'll have hours of endless 'fun' doing the setup! (I expect that a degree of swearing will take place, and that I will call into question the parentage of several software designers during the process.)

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Bob, one of my least favorite and most avoided tasks is setting up a new pc. Transferring all of the old files over to the new and reinstalling ALL of the software is a task to avoid like the plague.

Swearing and frustration are almost always involved in the endeavor.

    3. Jonathan Freitag,

Installing software on a new computer is always the most tedious of the tasks one has to undertake ... and I do find Windows 10 and its 'apps' especially annoying.

      All the best,

      Bob

Well I waited ... and it came. Now all I have to do is set it up ... which should only take me a few hours of frustration, angst, and swearing.

      All the best,

      Bob

      It was, wasn't it!

    3. You'll understand one of my reasons to retire when I did was that my work required bursts lasting several days at a time when you had to setup from scratch about 7 or 8 PCs per day.

    4. Jim Duncan,

I worked for nearly ten years teaching ICT in a London comprehensive school, and did my bit helping the technicians when new network rooms were set up. It could be very tedious and time-consuming work which was never understood or appreciated by the powers that be.l

We are both well out of it!

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. I admit that my chromebook has limitations but set was about 30 seconds and there was all my old stuff.

Best of luck with the new machine.

    1. Ross Mac,

The problem is that most of programs (or should I call them 'apps' these days?) that I use are MS Windows-based, so it had to be a laptop that was compatible. I was looking for the cheapest I could get that would do ... and I am paying the price of being a cheapskate.

I'll get there in the end ... but none too quickly!

      All the best,

      Bob
